St. Mary Missionary Baptist Church has a rich history that began in 1915 when a dedicated group of worshipers, led by Frank Mosley, came together to form the first church in Hopewell. Among the early pioneers were Deacons Nathan George, Eddie Mooney, Reed Broadnax, Melvin Guin, and Arthur Ingram, who was the first deacon ordained at Saint Mary. In 1948, the church relocated to its current site under the guidance of J. E. Harmon and James Scantling. Rev. Scantling, a visionary leader, oversaw significant renovations to accommodate the growing congregation. By 1996, Rev. Dr. Shafter E. Scott embraced the motto “Growing, Glowing, and Going,” continuing to lead the Saint Mary family into the 21st century with unwavering spiritual guidance.
